While Transportation Engineering Department deals with feasibility studies, design and construction supervision of highways, Appropriate Technology department mainly deals with feeder roads.

75% of our country roads network consists mainly of gravel and earth roads which are mainly in the rural areas where main economic activity of agriculture that accounts for 70% of Kenya’s GDP take place. Most of these roads carry less than 300 vehicles per day.

The sustainability of the investments in the roads, therefore, depends mainly on implementing appropriate and innovative design for the low volume traffic roads.

Appropriate Technology Department deals with innovative designs, construction supervision and maintenance of low volume traffic roads. The departments other key mandate is to build capacity through training of local small scale/medium contractors in application of appropriate and effective use of labour based approaches in road construction to help alleviate unemployment .
